If you are planning a vacation trip to Singapore, you must of course know what clothing is appropriate for the place. There are some things you have to consider to know what to wear in Singapore, such as the climate, the culture, and the locals’ general perception of what acceptable clothing is.

The city-state of Singapore is situated very near the Earth’s equator. This location gives it very warm weather all year round. Singapore has no pronounced or distinct seasons, and the weather is sunny almost every single day except during occasional thunderstorms. It is recommended that you wear light clothing to keep you comfortable during warm days. The weather in Singapore can sometimes get really hot, so cotton shirts, shorts, and half shorts are good choices to keep you cool in humid weather.

Ladies can wear sleeveless tops or tank tops. Unlike the culture of some places in Asia, Singaporean culture does not frown upon women wearing clothing that is a bit revealing, so it’s perfectly acceptable to wear sleeveless tops. Ladies can also wear light skirts and dresses. Clothes made from linen or lightweight silk are also a fine choice, as they help you stay comfortable when the day gets too hot. If you are not comfortable wearing shorts or you need to wear pants (some places like restaurants have dress codes), then choose pants made from linen. Take note, however, that linen tends to have a wrinkled appearance.

The locals are fond of wearing flip-flops, so make sure this is on your list of what to wear in Sinapore. Wearing flip-flops helps you blend in with the crowd. On the other hand, wearing shoes with white socks is a sure way to get people to notice that you are a tourist. If you don’t have flip-flops, you can go for sandals. Aside from being considered fashionable in Singapore, it is perfectly suited to the weather. Again, remember that flip-flops are not allowed in some establishments.

Don’t forget to bring at least one set of not-so-casual clothes for those unplanned elegant dinners or perhaps an evening at the Theatre in Esplanade. Wearing stockings is not necessary for ladies even in such settings. If you’re planning to go around the city and visit some mosques or temples, it is best that ladies wear linen pants or capri pants and a blouse with full or capped sleeves, and that men wear linen pants and sleeved shirts in order to pay respect to the place.

One thing that must always be on your list of what to wear in Singapore is a light sweater. Yes, the weather is very hot, but the air-conditioning in buildings and even in the MRT is very strong, so it would be wise to bring your sweater with you wherever you go. Ladies can also wear a pashmina, which can be worn more fashionably.

Aside from knowing what to wear in Singapore, you must also know what other essentials to bring. First, sunglasses are a must to protect your eyes from the sun’s glare. Second, wear a sunscreen wherever you go. And third, always keep a small umbrella in your bag. The rains can surprise you, especially if you visit during the months of December to January or August to September. There are times when it rains almost every day. The rains come unannounced: with the heat of the day, you would never suspect there would be rain.
