With its tropical climate, Singapore provides the perfect setting to hit the water. Thus, waterskiing and other water sports in Singapore top the list of recreational activities for tourists. The waters on the coasts of the city-state can be described as having minimal wave disturbance. This means the waters are generally calm and devoid of large waves. This characteristic makes them very ideal for waterskiing and other water sports that do not require waves.

Wakeboarding is another popular water sport in Singapore. In recent years, the sport has attracted an increasing number of people, thanks to the promotional efforts of the Singapore Waterski & Wakeboard Federation in partnership with major wakeboarding clubs. Some spots for wakeboarding include Extreme Sports, Maxout Hydrosports, and Launch Wakeboard School in Marina Country Club. Extreme Sports in Kallang Riverside has top of the line equipment and offers one-on-one coaching on wakeboarding. Maxout Hydrosports is located in Raffles Marina. Its rates are lower compared to the others. They often co-host Boardsailing and Wakeboarding championship events.

Windsurfing is another sport that has gained popularity alongside waterskiing and other water sports in Singapore. It is particularly attractive to those who love the feeling of cutting through the water surface while riding a wind-powered board. It is best to go windsurfing on the months of July to October when the southwest monsoon blows, or on the months of December to February when the northeast monsoon blows. If you want to learn more about windsurfing, you can go to the People’s Association Sea Sports Club at East Coast Park or the Sea Sports Centre at the National Service Resort and Country Club for quick beginners’ courses. You may also rent windsurfing equipment in these facilities.

Cable skiing is one of the more affordable water sports you can do in Singapore. Similar to waterskiing and wakeboarding, cable skiing involves holding on to a cord that is attached to an overhead cable. The cable usually hangs 8 to 12 meters above the water. As you ride the board, the cable will pull the cord forward, giving you an experience similar to being pulled by a boat. This water sport is comparatively less expensive compared to waterskiing and other water sports in Singapore, which is why it is increasingly becoming popular among the locals. You can go cable skiing at SKI360degree in East Coast Park, which has the only cable skiing facility in the Lion City.

Canoeing is another water sport you can do in Singapore. You can try whitewater kayaking or sea kayaking. However, whitewater kayaking is only for beginners, as there are no rough rivers in Singapore to satisfy the urge of those who are longing for more adrenalin rush.

Perhaps the most unique water sport you can experience in Singapore is wave surfing. Unlike waterskiing and other water sports in Singapore, wave surfing is done on simulated waves and not on the sea or river. Because Singapore has no giant waves that can accommodate wave surfing, Wave House Sentosa created a facility that simulates natural waves to provide wave surfers a venue to enjoy their favorite water sport. Surfers can now glide on the 10-foot Flow Barrel wave or the smaller Double Flow Rider.

If you love to swim, you are in luck because you will find a lot of great places for swimming in Singapore. There are lots of public pools in the city where you can take your daily laps. These public pools vary according to crowd, size, and quality. The trick is to be able to find one with an adequate pool size and one that is clean, not too crowded, and accessible.

There are large, open-air public pools all over Singapore, most of them measuring 50 meters or even more. To help you find one nearest you, you can check out Singapore Sports Council’s list of public pools. The average entrance fee for these pools are $1 to $1.50 only, and most of them are open every day. Try not to go on a weekend, though, because they are often packed on weekends.

You must keep in mind that these public pools are not for lounging under the sun on a lazy day. They are for leisure swimming, for really enjoying the water or swimming as a form of workout. If you are looking for a place where you can recline on a lounger and stay out on the sun, then it would be best for you to head out to the beach or check in at a resort-type accommodation. Not all the beaches in Singapore are good for swimming. In some areas, the water is dirty and not suitable at all for any kind of water sport.

The best beaches for swimming in Singapore are found in Sentosa Island and East Coast Park. There are three beaches found along the 3.2-kilometer white sand shores of Sentosa Island. These are Tanjong Beach, Palawan Beach, and Siloso Beach. Tanjong Beach is relatively quiet, so this is the perfect place if you are seeking solitude. Palawan Beach is great for family outings. One attraction of Palawan Beach is the suspension beach that connects it to Asia’s southernmost tip. Siloso Beach is for those who love sports and social activities, as it has a number of volleyball courts and bars. East Coast Park has 15 kilometers of coastline that is ideal for different kinds of water sports as well as other sports activities.

If you are longing for some good swimming for a refreshing cardio workout, one of the best places to go swimming in Singapore is SAFRA public pool. SAFRA is a recreational and sports club with an Olympic-sized pool. It also has a small wading pool for children. Lifeguards are always on standby so you don’t have to worry about safety. The facilities in SAFRA are clean, and compared to other public pools, theirs can actually be considered as “business class” standard. The pool is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 8am to 9:30pm and every Monday from 11am to 9:30pm. Entrance fee is $2.20 to $3.30 only.

Another place where you can go swimming in Singapore is Wild Wild Wet, a water theme park featuring giant water slides, a tidal wave pool, the Shiok River, a raft slide, and many other rides. Considering its facilities, the entrance fee of $16 is not bad. Jurong East Swimming Complex is also a theme park. Here, you will find the Lazy River, a wave pool, a competition pool, three water slides, and a jacuzzi. There’s also a small fun pool for children. The entrance fee for Jurong East Swimming Complex is unbelievably low – just $1.50 during weekdays and $2 during weekends.

In recent years, so many spas have sprouted all over Singapore. Local residents and tourists now find so many choices as to where they would want to indulge for a soothing massage. Singapore spas offer various kinds of treatments, such as traditional Chinese massage, Ayurvedic massage, hydrotherapy, and others. The following is a short list of the best upmarket spas in Singapore.

Spa Botanica in Sentosa is one of the most famous in Singapore. It was included in Conde Nast Traveller’s World’s Top 10 Urban Day Spa. Set in the midst of relaxing lush green surroundings, guests in Spa Botanica are given, according to their preference, either indoor or outdoor treatments that are sure to leave them completely renewed and refreshed. Aside from this, guests can calm their senses further in the floatation pools, cascading waterfalls, and Jacuzzis. They can also take a dip in the swimming pool. Although a bit pricey compared to other spas, Spa Botanica’s signature treatments consist of 3 hours of pure indulgence. When you step out of the spa’s premises, you will no doubt feel like a new person.

Aviva Spa is also one of the best spas in Singapore. Being the only nature retreat spa in Singapore, Aviva basically utilizes nature’s tranquil ambience and allows guests to create their own preferred spa experience. It provides the perfect way to escape the stresses of city life without having to leave the city. Aviva Spa is conveniently located near Pasir Ris Nature Park. Spa for Couples is a treatment package that can be enjoyed by couples. An entire family can be rejuvenated through the Family Retreat Spa package. There’s also a special package for brides (the Bridal Spa) and for new mothers (the Post-Natal Spa).

The Estheva Spa is one of the finest luxury day spas in Singapore. The Estheva Spa is located along Orchard Road in Singapore’s central business district. Its concept was taken from Southern Italy’s natural thermal spas. Its signature massages, which are the Chakra Stone Massage and the Aviva Massage – The Massage of Life, will give you an hour and a half of blissful treatment. The Estheva Spa offers detox, traditional, and deep-tissue massages, among others. Aside from these, it also offers beauty treatments like anti-aging procedures, body scrubs, body wraps, hand spa, leg and foot spa, waxing, and facial care procedures. There are also special packages for the bride. The Estheva can arrange spa parties for guests.

The Raffles Amrita Spa is among the top spas in Singapore. The treatments being offered here include the Day Spa Escape, the De-stresser, Nirvana body treatment, Grape Expectations, Healthy Indulgence, and the special Elixir of Youth. A Total Body Wellness package is offered to Raffles Amrita Spa’s visitors. This includes Sea Salt Scrub & Sea Mud Wrap followed by either a Scalp & Facial Acupressure Massage or Sea Mud Hair Treament. This is preceeded by an hour of stress-relieving aromatherapy massage and facial.

Who says it’s impossible to enjoy skiing and other snow sports in Singapore? The Lion City may be enveloped by year-round hot and humid weather, but yes, there is snow in Singapore. This is made possible by the Snow City, a large complex where the temperature is a freezing -5 degrees Celsius. Officially opened in 2000, the Snow City has given local residents and tourists a chance to experience snow and enjoy various snow sports and games.

The facility uses a snow gun that produces 10 to 15 tons of snow every week to keep the ground covered with 400 millimeters of snow. The snow-producing technology involves a simple process. First, compressed air is used to atomize water. The water is then channeled toward the snow gun and is pushed to come out of its nozzles. At the same time, liquid nitrogen goes through the snow gun, quickly freezing the atomized water and producing snowflakes. It takes a ton of water and a ton of liquid nitrogen to make a ton of snow, which means 10 to 15 tons of water and liquid nitrogen are used each week. Thanks to this technology, the Lion City now has its own winter wonderland.

Aside from skiing and other snow sports in Singapore, you can enjoy some games. Snow City’s Snow Chamber has a three-storey high, 60-meter long slope where you can slide down on an inflatable tube. This activity is known as snow tubing, which is a favorite among families. Groups can also take part in Winter Olympics games. Winter Olympics is a fun program comprised of different snow games for both adults and children over 8 years old. The games are perfect as team building exercises. Those who want to host Winter Olympics games for their school or office can choose from a number of games and design the activity to meet their event objectives.

People who want to learn about skiing and other snow sports in Singapore can enrol in short courses in Snow Sport School, which is offered by Snowline. The school’s facilities are also found within the Snow City complex. Snow City snowboarding and skiing lessons are given by highly qualified professional instructors. The school offers an intermediate level Learn-to-Ski/Snowboard (LTS) course for beginners.

This program follows the standards from the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors and the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance. It teaches the students the essential principles and techniques for snowboarding and skiing. After the course, the students are expected to possess the basic skills for proper and safe snowboarding and skiing, which they can apply when they go to ski resorts outside the city-state.

The courses take 4 weeks to complete. You have a choice of participating in a group class with one instructor and 4 to 8 students or in private class setups of one instructor to one student, one instructor to two students, or one instructor to three students. Group classes are less expensive while one-to-one instruction is the most expensive. The classes include play sessions where students can have fun and practice their skills at the same time. Snow City provides a practical way for people to learn skiing and other snow sports in Singapore.

When the British colonized Singapore, they introduced a new culture and new practices. Along with these is horse racing, which penetrated the local culture and stayed with the Singaporeans long after they were declared independent. After the first horse race happened in February of 1843, horse racing became one of the well-loved events in Singapore. Horse racing in Singapore remains popular and is considered a legal form of gambling.

The place where the first race was held was eventually named Race Course Road, which is now a street in Little India that is lined with restaurants specializing in fish head curry. Turf Club Road in Bukit Timah is another street whose name indicates the influence of horse racing in the culture. This was where Singapore Turf Club was originally located. It is presently dotted with Indonesian, Japanese, Indian, Chinese, and European restaurants.

The Singapore Turf Club is the only club dedicated to horse racing in Singapore. It used to known as the Singapore Sporting Club. Established in 1842, it continues to be the city-state’s sole legal gambling body for the sport. From its old location in Turf Club Road, the club transferred in 1999 to the Singapore Racecourse in Kranji where it is found today. The following year, the Singapore Racecourse was officially opened by Singapore president S. R. Nathan.

The Singapore Racecourse in Kranji, which is in northern Singapore, is a state-of-the-art race track located approximately 20 kilometers away from the city center. It was designed with utmost quality in mind. Aside from giving it its own unique features, the builders of Singapore Racecourse took some designs from the best racetracks in the world and incorporated those into Singapore Racecourse’s plan. One of the racetrack’s attractions is its four-storey Grandstand, which can amazingly hold a crowd of 30,000. The Singapore Racecourse has a Short Course track, a Long Course track, and a Polytrack, which is made from wax-coated fibers, rubber pieces, and silica sand.

Every year, almost 30 feature races are held in Kranji. There are races for Group 1 (major international races and classic races), Group 2 (international races that are not as significant as major ones), and Group 3 (domestic races) events. Each racing season will include 8 races from Group 1 events. A horse race meeting held at daytime commonly includes 9 to 12 races while one held at nighttime includes 7 to 9 races. Horse racing in Singapore follows the racing rules of the Malayan Racing Association, of which the Singapore Turf Club is a part.

Some of the most awaited events every year are the Singapore Airlines International Cup, a 2,000-meter race for middle distance gallopers; the Singapore Gold Cup, a 2,200-meter race held each November; the Singapore Derby, a 2,000-meter race held each July specifically for four-year-olds; and the KrisFlyer International Sprint, a 1,200-meter race intended for sprinters and held each May. From its colorful history, horse racing in Singapore has become an established sport and has earned the interest of so many people.

The beautiful weather enjoyed by Singapore all year round is perhaps one of the reasons why golf courses abound in the city-state. Over the years, Singapore has risen to become a major golfing hub in Asia. If you are a lover of golf and you are going here for a vacation, consider yourself fortunate because there are so many places where you can go golfing in Singapore. Here’s a short list of golf courses in the Lion City.

The Marina Bay Golf Course was built in 2006 and has an 18-hole course. Found in the Central Business District, the course is open to the public. Weekday fees range from $70 to $110 while weekend fees range from $115 to $190. The Marina Bay Golf Course has a driving range, and it has its own Golf School.

The Executive Golf Course is also a public course that is open to anyone who wants to go golfing in Singapore. This 9-hole course is situated in Mandai Road. It was built in 1993, and it has a driving range. Clubs and trolleys are available for rent. Fees range from $20 to $30 for weekday games and $30 to $45 for weekend games.

The private Changi Golf Club is located in Netheravon Road. Built in 1946, it used to be called the Royal Air Force Changi Golf Club. It has a 9-hole and 18-hole course and a driving range. The golf club also has a bar and a restaurant where you can have your fill of refreshments. Walk-in visitors can play the 9-hole course and the 18-hole course for just $45 and $90 during weekdays and $70 and $110 during weekends, respectively.

The Sentosa Golf Club is undoubtedly one of the best places to go golfing in Singapore. This private club opened in July 14, 1974. At that time, it only had the 18-hole Tanjong Course, which was built two years before Sentosa Golf Club’s official opening. Seeing the need for another course as golf continued to become popular in Singapore, the club management decided to build the Serapong Course, which was completed in 1982.

Designed by Ronald Fream, the Serapong Course is a very challenging one and is considered as one of Asia’s best championship courses. It is where the Barclays Singapore Open is held. The Sentosa Golf Club has its own Golf Academy where you can learn to play golf or improve your skills. As a visitor, you can play in the Tanjong Course for $280 on weekdays and $400 on weekends and holidays. You can also play in the Serapong Course for $330 on weekdays and $450 on weekends.

Raffles Country Club is another great place to go golfing in Singapore. It is located in Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim. It has two 18-hole courses – the Lake Course and the Palm Course. Both courses were designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. However, in 1988, Nelson & Haworth worked some improvements on the Lake Course. Visitor fees for playing on the Lake Course range from $75 to $185 on weekdays and $235 to $375 on weekends. Visitor fees for playing on the Palm Course range from $75 to $140 on weekdays and $200 to $325 on weekends. Other facilities in Raffles Country Club include a swimming pool, badminton and tennis courts, and bars and restaurants.

In recent years, gambling in Singapore has become more sophisticated and more available, making it one of the tourist attractions in Asia. A gambling ban that had been imposed for decades was lifted to give way to a tourism strategy that included establishing casinos in order to bring in more visitors to Singapore. As a result, two new casinos were opened in 2010: the Casino at Marina Bay Sands and the Resorts World Casino at Sentosa.

The opening of these two elegant casinos succeeded in luring visitors from nearby Asian countries and other parts of the world. In fact, it was so successful that the Lion City is foreseen to dislodge Las Vegas in 2012 from the number 2 spot for having the largest gambling market. Las Vegas fell from the number 1 spot in 2006 and came second to Macau.

The government’s decision to lift the gambling ban and allow casinos to be built came as a surprise to the rest of the world. Singapore has always held the reputation of shunning vices by embracing discipline and self-control, which was the reason why gambling was banned in the first place. In this city-state, discipline is given such a high premium that penalties are imposed on simple offenses like littering and jay walking. Chewing gum, which people sometimes dispose of in an undisciplined manner like sticking it under chairs and tables or throwing it on the sidewalk, has been banned in Singapore since 1992.

Thus, allowing gambling in Singapore has raised some questions. Is the strict government finally loosening up? The answer, of course, is no. The elegant casinos in Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa primarily target nonresidents. To discourage the locals from frequenting the casinos, the government requires Singapore citizens and permanent residents to pay an unrefundable levy of $100 for a 24-hour access to the casino or $2,000 for a 12-month access. So far, the levy has been effective in preventing many Singaporeans from gambling as they find it too expensive.

Advertising gambling in Singapore is not allowed in the local scene but is encouraged in the international scene. Even websites meant to attract the locals to go to the casinos are taken down. Singaporeans are always reminded that it is their responsibility to report any family member in whom they observe problem gambling behavior. When reported, such family member will be blacklisted in the casinos. The government has provided some guidelines to help Singaporeans identify problem gambling behavior. Examples of these are staying in the casino for a longer time than originally planned, gambling until all the money is gone, and borrowing money just to be able to gamble.

As mentioned, the two major places for gambling in Singapore are found in the Marina Bay Sands and in Resorts World Sentosa. The Marina Bay Sands has 1,600 slot machines, lots of electronic table games, and almost 500 table games offering Singapore Stud Poker, Money Wheel, Baccarat, Sic-Bo, and Roulette. Resorts World Casino also has numerous slots machines and table games. A dress code is in place here: those who are wearing shorts and slippers will not be allowed to enter the casino.

Every vacation is about enjoyment, relaxation, and lots of good food. The best thing about going on vacation to Singapore is that you get to sample different kinds of food from Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Western flavors. There are so many interesting places where you can go eating and drinking in Singapore that you would probably have a hard time deciding which food specialty to try first. To enjoy your gastronomic adventures to the fullest, be sure to try Singapore’s most popular dishes.

Nasi lemak is a Malay dish that is eaten for breakfast. It is a simple serving of anchovies, coconut milk-cooked rice, peanuts, and chili. Sometimes it is eaten with a slice of chicken or fish. Chili crab is a sample from the Peranakan cuisine, which is a mix of Chinese and Malay influences. It is a large crab cooked in rich chili sauce. It is best not to eat this dish when you are wearing a white top, or you might find your clothes decorated with chili sauce after eating. Satay with peanut sauce, another Peranakan food, is one of the most popular dishes in Singapore.

Fish head curry is an Indian food specialty. You can find many restaurants in Little India that serve this tasty dish. Finally, when you go eating and drinking in Singapore, don’t forget to try authentic Chinese or Cantonese food. Hokkien mee is fried noodles cooked in seafood stock, whose flavor deliciously penetrates every noodle strand. Char kway teow is another dish of fried noodles covered in brown sauce. It is often served with small slices of Chinese sausage, shrimp, vegetables, and fish cake.

A vacation in Singapore will not be complete if you don’t get to taste their famous hawker food. Old Airport Road Food Centre is known to have the best hawkers in the city. Here, you will find lots of hawker stalls selling all kinds of food from Chinese dimsum to fried noodles to satay to duck soup. This hawker center will give you a taste of the best foods in Singapore at affordable prices. Most stalls open in the late afternoon and close at 9:00pm or when their food is sold out.

Singapore has numerous shopping malls, and almost all of them have their own food courts. You can have a decent meal or snack in any food court, with the food prices being just slightly higher than those in hawker centers. These are convenient places to eat especially if you get hungry while shopping. There are also affordable restaurants in Singapore. An average meal will cost around $20 to 30. You will find many restaurants in Orchard Road, Little India, Chinatown, Kampong Glam, and Esplanade Park. Some of the best seafood restaurants are situated in East Coast.

For a fancier experience of eating and drinking in Singapore, head off to the Jewel Box in Mount Faber and dine in any of its four elegant restaurants. More upmarket restaurants can be found in Marina Bay Sands. For more privacy, you can go to the private dining areas in Sentosa Island.

If you want a taste of the explosive Lion City night life, your experience of eating and drinking in Singapore will not be complete without a visit to the city’s pulsating bars and clubs: the Zouk, Clarke Quay, and St. James Power Station.
